109-year-old Kurd recovers from COVID-19

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – A 109-year-old man recently hospitalized in the Kurdistan Region as his health deteriorated due to COVID-19 has made a full recovery, a doctor at the hospital said.

The centenarian man is from Sulaimani province's Penjwen district and was being treated at the "Martyr Hemin" hospital in Sulaimani city, according to a document submitted to the Kurdistan Region’s health ministry. The patient's name was not revealed.

The doctor specializing in treating COVID-19 at the healthcare facility, Hersh Haider, announced in a post on social media on Sunday that the man had successfully recovered from the disease.

Haider reiterated the importance of adhering to preventive measures to limit the spread of the disease.

"Above all, patients should not lose hope and must undergo the necessary treatment in order to be able to overcome the disease," he noted.

The oldest person to recover from the disease in the Kurdistan Region was 89 years old.

Adults and the elderly continue to be a significant portion of those infected with COVID-19 in the Kurdistan Region's capital of Erbil. Recently, half of all critical hospitalizations are patients below the age of 40, according to a local health official.

During the past 24 hours, the Kurdistan Region has recorded 2,422 new infections and 19 deaths, bringing the total number of cases in the region up to 234,380, including 9,720 deaths.
