Kurdistan President extends condolences on passing of EU parliament speaker

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Tuesday expressed his condolences to the family and colleagues of the President of the European Parliament, David-Maria Sassoli, who passed away earlier in the day.

At the end of his term as the head of the European Parliament, one of the EU's three legislative bodies, Mr. Sassoli died early Tuesday at a hospital in Italy due to an unidentified illness, his spokesperson announced.

"I'm saddened by the death of President David Sassoli of the European Parliament," President Nechirvan Barzani tweeted, extending his condolences to Sassoli's family, his fellow lawmakers, and the EU representation in the Kurdistan Region.

A member of the center-left Italian Democratic Party, Mr. Sassoli has been a lawmaker in the European Parliament since 2009. He became the legislative body's president in 2019.
