German Consulate in Erbil offers condolences on death of Yezidi figure

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The German Consulate in Erbil gave its condolences to the Yezidi community on Wednesday after Sheikh Shamo Sheikho Namo, a well-known Yezidi (Ezidi) figure, died of COVID-19 complications in a Turkish hospital.

"We express our sincere condolences to the family, friends and the entire Yazidi community for the passing of Sheikh Shamo," the German Consulate in Erbil tweeted. 

"We shall remember him as a great advocate for Yezidi rights in Iraq and KRI (Kurdistan Region of Iraq)."

Sheikh Shamo, the head of the Lalish Cultural Center's High Commission and an advisor of the prime minister on Ezidi affairs, caught the coronavirus about three weeks ago. As his health gradually deteriorated, he was taken to Ankara for treatment, where he died.

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani also offered his "sincere condolences" to the family and friends of Sheikh Shamo on Tuesday. The prime minister praised Sheikh Shamo for his services to the people of Kurdistan and praised staunch defense of Ezidi rights and promotion of peaceful coexistence in the region.
