Kurdistan Region-Iran border shut down over snowfall: Official 

Snowfall began in the northern parts of Erbil early Thursday, a week after a snowstorm hit the province, including the capital city.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Kurdistan Region’s border crossing with the Islamic Republic of Iran has been shut down due to the snowfall that began early Thursday, a border official confirmed to Kurdistan 24. 

Trade and tourism activities have been halted by the snowfall, Sirwan Hussein, the Haji Omaran border crossing spokesperson, told Kurdistan 24 on Thursday. 

Snowfall began in the northern parts of Erbil early Thursday, a week after a snowstorm hit the province, including the capital city.

Municipality workers in the area have been clearing the snowy roads and dispensing salt to reduce the risk of slippage.

Low visibility due to foggy weather and avalanches have been reported in Soran administration in Erbil’s north on Thursday.

Since early Thursday, the city center and parts of the northern areas have experienced rainy conditions. 

Rawanduz has witnessed 14.7 mm of rain in the past 24 hours, according to the Kurdistan Region weather authorities.

The cold and rainy conditions will continue on Friday, the weather agency forecast. 

Snowfall has reached Mount Sinjar, on which sits the Sardashti camp for displaced Yezidis.
