ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) is “instrumental” in ensuring that ISIS in Syria remains defeated and does not rise again, the US-led coalition said on Thursday.

“The resolute #SDF, coupled w/firm support from Coalition, is instrumental in ensuring Daesh’s (ISIS) enduring defeat & NE Syria’s lasting peace & security,” tweeted the official coalition account on Thursday.

“Thanks to the efforts by our SDF partners, Daesh has nowhere left to run,” it added. “Our anti-Daesh fight continues & we are #StrongerTogether.”

The tweet was in response to a series of infographics detailing how the SDF maintains several prisons with thousands of ISIS detainees across northeast Syria.

“The SDF are constantly working to improve security measures of the 27 detention centers that host more than 12,000 Daesh militants across northeast Syria,” read one infographic posted on the official Twitter account of the Global Coalition.

Another infographic said that Hasakah’s Al-Sina’a prison is the largest of these facilities, “holding at least 5,000 terrorist fighters.”

In a coordinated assault, ISIS tried to jailbreak all the detainees at Al-Sina’a in January. The SDF foiled the effort after ten days of bitter fighting. The coalition supported the SDF operation with Bradley Fighting Vehicles and AH-64 Apache attack helicopters.

“Since 2019, the SDF succeeded in preventing 20 escape attempts from Al-Sina’a prison alone,” the Global Coalition noted.

“While the SDF take the lead on securing prisons, the Coalition supports their efforts with logistical and military assistance,” the account added.

“The Global Coalition assists the SDF with securing the prisons through logistical, technical and military support.”
