Al-Halboosi and KDP discuss Iraqi government formation

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halboosi received a delegation from the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in his office in Baghdad on Saturday. 

"In the meeting, the attendees discussed the political developments in Iraq and the next stage," al-Halboosi's media office tweeted.

They also emphasized the need to fill the rest of Iraq's senior positions. The parliament has yet to elect the next president and prime minister. 

KDP Politburo Secretary Fazil Mirani led the KDP delegation. Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, KDP member Shakhawan Abdullah, also attended the meeting. 

Al-Halboosi has been re-elected as the Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament after securing 200 votes from 228 lawmakers present during the body's first session on Jan. 9.

On Saturday, the parliament voted to reopen the door for presidential candidates. More than 203 out of 265 deputies present in the 329-seat parliament voted to reopen the door for candidacies, while 62 deputies abstained.

The parliamentary alliance of the KDP, al-Halboosi's Al-Siyada alliance, and the Sadrist Movement have agreed to vote for the KDP candidate for president, Rebar Ahmed, and the Sadrist candidate for prime minister.
