Gas explosion in Duhok causes casualties

Initial reports suggest four persons were killed and 24 people injured.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – A gas explosion in Duhok in a bakery located above a student dormitory caused several casualties, including a number of dead and several people injured.

Duhok Governor Ali Tatar told Kurdistan 24 that four persons were killed and 30 were injured in the Duhok gas explosion.

Moreover, he added some of victims were heavily injured and the death toll is expected to climb.

One of the killed persons was a police officer.

Students below the bakery already left the building before the explosion happened.

Last week, 14 people also died due to a gas leak explosion in Sulaimani.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has suspended the gas system until the results of the investigation into the recent explosions are announced.

Following the Duhok incident, the Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani ordered the Ministries of Interior and Natural Resources to stop the use of gas systems.

Moreover, the PM Barzani ordered all relevant parties to investigate the gas explosions in Sulaimani and Duhok provinces.
