ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) ninth cabinet has licensed over 60 investment projects in Duhok province since July 2019 in a bid to boost private sector and economic growth, according to local officials.

The projects have been implemented in the industrial and agricultural sectors, according to Haval Sidiq, the head of Duhok investment authority, speaking to Kurdistan 24 on Thursday.

The investment body has facilitated more than 270 investment projects across the province, where they have created around 100,000 indirect job opportunities in Duhok, whose young population has struggled with high unemployment.

Duhok Terminal, a bus interchange center, has been in operation since 2019. It is one of the projects that have directly created 1,000 job opportunities for the local population, according to Shadin Jamil, the project’s supervisor, told Kurdistan 24.

Jamil expects, that once the project is fully finished, it will create an additional 1,000 new jobs for the local workforce.

Tackling high unemployment is one of the aims of the current KRG cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, according to government officials.

The government has also encouraged entrepreneurship and supported farmers in revitalizing the agricultural sector in a bid to create more job opportunities and achieve self-sufficiency in the heavily based economy.
