War in Gaza poses a threat to the entire region: President Nechirvan Barzani
ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Thursday received the UK Chief of the Defense Staff’s Senior Advisor to the Middle East and North Africa, Air Marshal Martin ‘Sammy’ Sampson and his military delegation and underlined that the war in Gaza is a threat to the whole region.
"President Nechirvan Barzani and Air Marshal Sampson exchanged views on the latest developments and the potential consequences of the ongoing war in Gaza," the Kurdistan Region Presidency said in a readout.
"The President emphasized that the war in Gaza poses a threat to the entire region and stressed that Iraq should avoid being drawn into the conflict, which would only exacerbate the dire and complex situation."
The Barzani Charity Foundation (BCF) so far has send 14 tons of medicine and medical supplies, 2,500 baskets of food, 200 baskets of medicine and 200 boxes of clothes to Gaza.
The Hamas-linked Gaza Health Ministry recently announced the death toll has reached nearly 14,500 people in the Gaza Strip since the Israeli offensive began on Oct. 7.
Moreover, on Oct. 7, Hamas attacks killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians in Israel. Moreover, over 200 people were kidnapped by Hamas.
Israel and Hamas have reached recently a deal to exchange 50 of the hostages held in Gaza for a four-day pause in fighting. The exchange will begin on Friday morning time.
Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and the UK Chief of the Defense Staff’s Senior Advisor Air Marshal Martin ‘Sammy’ Sampson also discussed the political situation in Iraq.
They agreed on the importance of maintaining Iraq’s political stability, peace and security.
Furthermore, they stressed the need for all parties to act responsibly and protect the international coalition forces and diplomats in Iraq from any sort of attacks.
In addition, both sides agreed that ISIS remains a real threat to the security and stability of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and agreed there is a need to prevent its resurgence.
Also Air Marshal Sampson reiterated the continued commitment of the UK, as a member of the international coalition, to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
As an integral part of the 86-member Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, the UK has been assisting the Kurdish Peshmerga and Iraqi forces in the fight against the ISIS. Moreover, the UK supports the Peshmerga reform program, together with German, the United States, and the Netherlands.
Also a number of Kurdish officers are currently enrolled at the UK’s Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, including two female Peshmerga officers.
Furthermore, they also discussed the recent "meetings between the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) as a positive development."
