ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) on Saturday welcomed the ceasefire decision and cessation of hostilities between the Israeli government and Hamas.

“The exchange of Palestinian prisoners with hostages held by Hamas is also appreciated. The Council calls on both parties to continue releasing hostages and prisoners, extending the ceasefire to achieve a permanent cessation of hostilities, preventing future humanitarian disasters and tragedies,” the SDC, the political wing of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), said in a statement.

“The Council urges all relevant international parties, especially the United States, the Republic of Egypt, and the State of Qatar, to advance diplomatic efforts to stop the war in Gaza, end the crisis, and encourage involved international parties, particularly relevant Arab states, to contribute to resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.”

The SDC says this “includes finding a peaceful solution, respecting laws of international legitimacy, and adhering to United Nations resolutions to achieve a sustainable resolution based on the two-state solution and establishing a just peace.”

On Oct. 7, an attack by Hamas killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians in Israel. Moreover, over 200 people were kidnapped by Hamas.

The Hamas-linked Gaza Health Ministry recently announced the death toll has reached nearly 14,800 people in the Gaza Strip since the Israeli offensive began on Oct. 7.

Israel and Hamas have recently reached a deal to exchange 50 of the hostages held in Gaza for a four-day pause in fighting.

However, Hamas on Sunday said it would be delaying the release of Israeli hostages, accusing Israel of violating the cease-fire agreement regarding aid.
