Man accused of attacking Kurdish resident in Kirkuk arrested

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – A man was arrested by Kirkuk police on Saturday, standing accused of an attack on a Kurd near the Kirkuk governor's office, according to a statement from the Kirkuk police directorate.   

Other suspects have been identified, and the search continues to find and arrest them, with the police stressing they will not tolerate any form of discrimination between Kirkuk's different communities.

Several Arab citizens were celebrating the announcement of the preliminary results of the provincial council election that evening near the new office of the governor of Kirkuk. At that time, a Kurdish youth dressed in Kurdish clothing was attacked by Arabs.

After the incident, Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament Shakhawan Abdullah announced in a statement that they had investigated the incident, and the commander of operations in Kirkuk had promised to reveal the identity of the perpetrators.

On Dec. 19, The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) announced the preliminary results, roughly 94% of the total ballots, of the provincial council election held on Monday, with a full count of the ballots to be announced in the “coming days.”
