US Voices Concerns Over Iraq's Federal Court Ruling against KRG, says head of Foreign Relations

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – In a recent appearance on the "For Everyone" program, Safeen Dizayee, the head of the Kurdistan Regional Government's Foreign Relations Department, shed light on the recent discussions between Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and US officials and characterized them as “more detailed”.

Over the past three decades, KRG political leaders have maintained a regular presence in the United States, engaging in substantial meetings at the high echelons of US politics.

Dizayee emphasized the significance of Prime Minister Barzani's visit to the US, particularly amid the intricate web of crises and challenges in the Middle East, coupled with Iraq's multifaceted political, legal, and security issues.

He underscored the US's acknowledgment of the importance of Barzani, his cabinet, and the Kurdistan Region as a whole, viewing it as a response to criticisms directed at them.

Highlighting the Kurdistan Region's entitlement to international relations within the framework of the federal system, the Iraqi constitution, and international agreements, Dizayee pointed out that “numerous countries have established consulates in the Kurdistan Region.”

Expressing concern over the Iraqi government and Federal Court's decisions against the Kurdistan Region, he cited US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken's explicit call for adherence to the constitution.

Dizayee asserted the unity of the ninth cabinet, particularly underlining its strength when dealing with Iraq.

He attributed the expedited visit of Prime Minister Barzani to the US, preceding Iraq's Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, to the pressures facing the Kurdistan Region, emphasizing the importance of al-Sudani's US visit for serious discussions on various issues.

On Tuesday Feb. 26, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani met with Antony Blinken, the United States Secretary of State, in Washington, D.C.

They discussed issues of mutual interest, developing bilateral relations and resolving disputes between the Kurdistan Region and the Federal Government.

The U.S. Secretary of State highlighted the importance of the Kurdistan Region as a valuable partner of the United States, emphasizing that the partnership is built on shared values, mutual interests, and shared sacrifices. Secretary Blinken expressed his pleasure over the Prime Minister's visit and his meetings in Washington, and he showed support for the security, peace, and stability of the Kurdistan Region as a federal entity within Iraq.
