US proposes $849.8B defense budget with $528M for Peshmerga, Allies

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – US President Joe Biden has submitted a $849.8 billion defense budget proposal to Congress for the fiscal year 2025, earmarking $528 million for the training and arming of Peshmerga, Iraqi forces, and the Syrian Democratic Forces.

The allocation reaffirms the United States' commitment to its reliable ally, the Kurdistan Region, recognizing the vital role of Peshmerga forces in the ongoing fight against terrorism.

The breakdown of the $528 million includes $257.58 million for training and arming, $9.7 million for logistical assistance, $60 million for salaries, $4.795 million for infrastructure upgrades and repairs, and $49.205 million for workshops.

The latter covers repairs to weapons, vehicles, and other equipment.

The proposal responds to the persistent threat of ISIS in the region, with the Pentagon emphasizing the United States' dedication to supporting the Peshmerga, Iraqi forces, and the Syrian Democratic Forces in countering and dismantling ISIS.

The budget is expected to undergo approval from the US Senate and House of Representatives in the coming months before President Biden signs and implements it in the following year.
