ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Political Bureau in a statement on Monday said that they "refrain from justifying unconstitutional and undemocratic elections."

The statement indicated that the State Administration Coalition will be held accountable on a national level for their failure to implement the constitution and adhere to all the provisions outlined in the political and administrative agreement that led to the formation of the current Iraqi government.

“We understand our position and historical responsibility to protect the legitimate rights of the Kurdish people and the democratic and federal system of Iraq. We also aim to refrain from justifying unconstitutional and undemocratic elections. Furthermore, we are committed to standing against all violations of the constitution, particularly those carried out by the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court against the Kurdistan Region and its constitutional institutions as a whole. We strongly oppose the imposition of unconstitutional amendments to the sixth session of the Kurdistan Parliament,” the statement read.

By removing the quota seat from the Kurdistan Parliamentary Election Law, a key principle of ensuring free and fair elections and equal opportunities in the Kurdistan Region has been disregarded, per the statement.

The statement also added that successive decisions by the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court have violated the principle of separation of powers. The court has, in effect, assumed the roles of the legislative and executive branches, granting itself powers and privileges not stipulated in the constitution.
