ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Askandar Zrar, a poet and writer, on Wednesday told Kurdistan24 that a ceremony would be held on World Poetry Day in Erbil. The ceremony is being organized under the supervision of the Governor of Erbil in collaboration with the Khawin Cultural Center and the Ala Center.

World Poetry Day was established by UNESCO in 1999 to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of poetry and its power to promote linguistic diversity. Observed on March 21st each year, this day serves as a platform for poets, poetry enthusiasts, and organizations to showcase the beauty and significance of poetry in various cultures around the world.

"March 21 is World Poetry Day celebrated worldwide. UNESCO has observed this day for several years. However, as it coincides with the first day of Newroz and Ramadan this year, we have decided to hold the ceremony on the night of March 20," Zrar explained.

He also revealed that the ceremony will be attended by singer Zakariya Mohsin, as well as poets Dilzar Hassan, Goran Rasul, Dastan Barzan, Bzhar Hakim, Soran Salih, and Hawdang Bebash.

"After the reading of the poems, eight poets who have made significant contributions to the Kurdistan liberation movement in recent years will be recognized and awarded," he added.

Kurdish poetry plays a crucial role in shaping and preserving the cultural identity of the Kurdish people. Through its powerful imagery, symbolism, and themes of resilience and resistance, Kurdish poetry serves as a medium for expressing their struggle for freedom and asserting their unique cultural heritage. It not only inspires and unites the Kurdish community, but also raises awareness and garners support for their cause on a global scale.
