ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Wednesday extended his congratulations on the occasion of the Kurdish New Year, known as Newroz, according to a statement from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

“On the occasion of Newroz and the Kurdish New Year 2724, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all Kurds, particularly the courageous Peshmergas, internal security forces, families of martyrs, and Anfal victims. I wish you all happiness and prosperity,” the statement read.

Prime Minister Barzani also said that “for the Kurdish people, Newroz has always symbolized victory, freedom, standing up against oppressors, and the start of a new era.”

“I have tremendous respect and appreciation for the resilient people of the Kurdistan Region. Unfortunately, they have become victims of political games played by certain individuals and parties who prioritize their own interests over the constitutional rights and financial entitlements of the Kurdish people. I sincerely hope that the coming year will mark the end of all suffering, oppression, and injustice faced by the Kurdish people," the Prime Minister added.

Newroz is the oldest national holiday celebrated by the Kurds worldwide, especially in their homeland. It begins on Mar. 21 and features various traditional celebrations and rituals.

To preserve the long-standing tradition of celebrating Newroz, thousands commemorate the holiday in the Akre district, which is famously considered the capital of Newroz.

Locals as well as other visitors, carrying torches, climb the town’s Mount Kale, on top of which a 100-meter-long Kurdistan flag is rolled out.

Although Newroz is a national holiday for Kurds, many people in the region, including Iraq, also celebrate the annual occasion.
