ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - In a recent interview, Saleh Mutlaq, a prominent Iraqi Sunni politician, emphasized the voluntary role of the United States in Iraq, dismissing notions of invasion and advocating for cooperation with the international community.

Mutlaq stressed that American presence in Iraq is voluntary and beneficial, serving the interests of Iraq rather than acting as invaders.

He highlighted the importance of the international coalition, stating, "The withdrawal of the Americans means the withdrawal of the international coalition. We see no excuse to create enmity with the international community."

Addressing the internal dynamics within Iraq, Mutlaq acknowledged the divisive aftermath of the provincial council elections among the Sunni community. He characterized the current challenges as a crisis of interests rather than a leadership issue.

Recent developments include communication between the US government and the Iraqi State Department regarding the ongoing efforts against ISIS. The Iraqi government received a letter through Ambassador Alina Romanowski reaffirming the commitment to the international coalition against ISIS.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin reiterated the voluntary nature of US troops' presence in Iraq, emphasizing their role in the international coalition against terrorism. Austin affirmed the US commitment to Iraq's security, stability, and sovereignty.

Furthermore, the Iraqi Prime Minister's office announced discussions between Iraq and the US-led international coalition to reassess the coalition's military mission post the victory over ISIS. This collaborative effort aims to ensure continued security and stability in Iraq and the wider region.

Mutlaq's stance underscores the importance of constructive engagement with the United States and the broader international community in combating terrorism and fostering stability in Iraq. As Iraq navigates post-conflict challenges, cooperation with global partners remains paramount in securing a peaceful and prosperous future for the nation.
