KRG unveils land distribution program to tackle economic strain

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - In a bid to address economic challenges, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has launched a major initiative to distribute land, marking a crucial decision under the leadership of Prime Minister Masrour Barzani.

Minister of Municipalities and Tourism, Sasan Awni, underscored the importance of this initiative in an interview with Kurdistan 24, noting that it represents a crucial step forward for employees and salaried workers who have not benefited from such programs in over 18 years.

"For the first time since 2006, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has made a decision in favor of employees, offering a vital opportunity for individuals to alleviate their economic burdens," stated Awni.

Awni revealed that the process of identifying suitable land across the provinces of the Kurdistan Region will kick off next week, with his ministry collaborating closely with local institutions to expedite the endeavor.

Highlighting the technical intricacies involved, Awni emphasized the need for engineering assessments and mapping exercises to facilitate the allocation process effectively. He assured that all eligible employees of the KRG, both civilian and military, will have access to this program.

Moreover, Awni assured that guidelines will be established to ensure fairness, extending benefits not only to salaried employees but also to contract workers and lecturers, subject to the established criteria.

Addressing concerns about land usage, Awni outlined plans to factor in green spaces, infrastructure provisions, and public service accessibility in the land planning process. Subsequent phases will focus on providing essential services to the allocated land parcels.

Looking ahead, Awni expressed the government's commitment to bolstering financial stability and expanding services. He disclosed plans for future initiatives, including housing loans for citizens and employees, aiming to enhance living standards across the region.

In addition to the land distribution initiative, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani's decision to implement a 20% discount across various municipal fees was clarified by Awni. The discount, applicable to water rent, garbage fees, and tourism charges, among others, will remain in effect indefinitely, reflecting the government's ongoing efforts to alleviate financial burdens on citizens.

The launch of the land distribution program signifies a proactive approach by the KRG to address economic hardships and enhance socio-economic prospects for its residents, marking a significant stride towards sustainable development in the Kurdistan Region.
