ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - Cardinal Louis Sako, the esteemed Patriarch of the Chaldean Church in Iraq and globally recognized figure, lauded the unwavering support of KDP President Masoud Barzani towards communities, emphasizing that their gratitude extends beyond words.

In an interview with Kurdistan24 on Thursday, April 4, Cardinal Sako expressed profound appreciation for President Barzani's steadfast defense of communities’ rights, noting that his actions will forever be etched in the memory of Christians in Iraq and beyond.

"President Barzani has consistently championed the rights of all communities, never once turning a blind eye to their struggles," affirmed Cardinal Sako. "His resolute stance, particularly in safeguarding their representation in the Kurdistan Parliament, resonates deeply with us."

Highlighting the warm reception afforded to all communities in the Kurdistan Region, Cardinal Sako underscored the region's significance as a sanctuary for Christians.

"As Christians, we find solace in this land, which we proudly call home. It is a refuge, not a source of strife, contrary to misconceptions held by some," he remarked.

Expressing hopes for a more inclusive Iraq, Cardinal Sako urged the federal government to emulate the Kurdistan Region's example by embracing its diverse populace.

"We yearn for a nation that nurtures its children, rather than compelling them to seek refuge elsewhere. The plight of forced migration, oppression, and expulsion weighs heavily on our hearts," he lamented.

Reflecting on past challenges, Cardinal Sako recalled President Barzani's unwavering support during critical junctures, particularly amidst the ISIS onslaught targeting Christians.

"President Barzani's solidarity during times of peril, including the ISIS crisis and subsequent withdrawal of discriminatory decrees, embodies a beacon of hope for Christians," he affirmed. "His words resonate as a testament to his unwavering commitment to justice and inclusivity."

The interview shed light on recent legal challenges faced by Cardinal Sako, including a controversial decree issued by Iraqi President Latif Rasheed, and subsequent legal summons based on alleged defamation charges. Seeking refuge in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region, Cardinal Sako remains committed to advocating for the rights of Christians in Iraq, undeterred by legal obstacles.
