ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Dr. Hawar Nerwayi, an expert in international relations and a professor at a university in Duhok, emphasized the strategic nature of the relationship between the United States and Iraq, particularly the Kurdistan Region.

Speaking to Kurdistan24 on Saturday, April 13, 2024, Dr. Nerwayi highlighted the evolution of this strategic bond since 2001. "Despite considerable pressure for US troop withdrawal from Iraq in recent years, the ties between the two nations, especially with Kurdistan, remain deeply entrenched," he remarked.

"The multifaceted crises—military, political, economic, and social—in the wake of conflicts such as the Israel-Hamas war, directly impact the region, notably Iraq and Kurdistan," he explained.

Dr. Nerwayi underscored the significance of these issues in shaping Iraqi relations, noting, "The United States now recognizes that Iraqi stability is inherently linked to the well-being of the Kurdistan Region."

Addressing internal challenges within Kurdistan, Dr. Nerwayi dismissed their substantial impact on bilateral relations.

"Despite occasional difficulties and unresolved issues within Kurdistan, they have not significantly hindered the overarching relationship between Kurdistan and Iraq. Any delays in implementing agreements stem more from internal dynamics within Iraq rather than within Kurdistan," he clarified.

The assessment by Dr. Nerwayi highlights the enduring strategic importance of the US-Iraq relationship and sheds light on its implications for the Kurdistan Region amidst broader regional challenges.
