Kirkuk receives Article 140 compensation checks

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Kirkuk office announced the arrival of 845 bank checks related to Article 140 compensation on Tuesday. The checks, each valued at 10 million dinars, amount to a total of 8 billion 445 million dinars. While several Turkmen citizens received compensation checks, the majority belonged to Kurdish citizens.

Kakarash Sadiq, the head of the Article 140 implementation office, stated that compensation transactions 32, 33, and 34 were forwarded to Baghdad before Ramadan to initiate the compensation process based on available funds.

"We have devised measures and guidelines for check distribution, and distribution will commence on Wednesday. Due to limited office capacity, we can distribute 300 checks daily to manage crowd pressure," Sadiq explained.

Citizens visiting the office are required to provide specific documents, particularly their national identification card and Kirkuk voting card, as stipulated by the office. These measures ensure efficient and orderly compensation distribution.

This development marks a significant step in the implementation of Article 140, aimed at addressing historical grievances and providing restitution to eligible individuals in Kirkuk and other disputed territories.

Article 140 of the Iraqi Constitution outlines a process for resolving disputes over territories subjected to Arabization policies under Saddam Hussein's regime, including Kirkuk. The compensation checks represent a tangible effort to address historical injustices and promote reconciliation in Iraq's diverse communities.
