KRG President calls for adherence to journalism laws, ethics

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) president has issued a call for journalists to uphold the law on journalism and adhere to ethical standards in their reporting.

In a message marking the 126th anniversary of Kurdish Journalism Day, the publication of Mir Miqdad Badrkhan's newspaper Kurdistan, and the 26th anniversary of the establishment of the Union of Journalists Kurdistan, KRG President Nechirvan Barzani extended warm congratulations to all Kurdistan journalists and wished them success.

President Barzani emphasized the importance of creating an enabling environment for media work, ensuring journalists have access to information sources without discrimination, and avoiding undue restrictions and censorship.

He underscored the vital role of journalists in monitoring institutions, raising public awareness, and contributing to the development of democracy and society.

"While reaffirming my full support for journalists and my unwavering belief in press freedom and expression as fundamental principles of democracy and freedom-loving societies, I urge journalists to abide by journalism laws and ethical standards," stated President Barzani. "They should maintain impartiality, avoid disseminating false news and inflammatory language, and promote social peace, political stability, and the highest interests of the people and the country."

President Barzani also praised the efforts of local and international organizations in monitoring the state of press freedom and expression in the Kurdistan Region. He paid tribute to the memory of martyred journalists and those who dedicated their lives to truth-telling and advancing Kurdistan's journalism during times of revolution and freedom.

The Kurdistan Regional Government's call for adherence to journalism laws and ethics reaffirms its commitment to promoting responsible journalism and ensuring a free and vibrant media landscape in the Kurdistan Region.

The third international summit for journalism in Erbil is poised to address pressing issues surrounding the protection of women journalists from gender discrimination.

Organized under the auspices of the Kurdistan Region’s Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and Kurdistan Journalist's Syndicate (KJS), in collaboration with the Gender Committee of Journalists via International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), the summit marks a significant milestone in advancing gender equality within the field of journalism.

Scheduled to coincide with the 26th anniversary of the Kurdistan Journalist's Syndicate, the summit will convene on April 22 and 23, providing a platform for dialogue and collaboration among journalists, media professionals, and stakeholders.
