Vehicles emitting excessive smoke to be confiscated

The Erbil Traffic Authority announces that vehicles emitting excessive smoke and polluting the environment will be confiscated and their owners will be given huge fines.

Colonel Hemen Amin, spokesperson for the Erbil General Directorate of Traffic, disclosed to Kurdistan24 on Sunday, June 2, 2024, that “vehicles that emit harmful smoke, particularly large and small trucks, such as Kia K2700 or similar vehicles, will be confiscated, handed huge fine to the owners and the owners will also be directed to repair their vehicles.”

"Our units monitor the streets daily, any vehicle that emits excessive smokes will be investigated and confiscated by the traffic teams. We have issued warnings several times through the Erbil Traffic Directorate," he said.

"The harmful smoke emitted by vehicles directly affects the respiratory system of citizens and those with asthma are severely affected," said Dr. Sarkar Surchi, spokesperson for the Ministry of Health.  

This decision comes as a coordinated effort by the Ministry of Health and Board of Environmental Protection and Improvement.

“We have held several meetings and coordinated between our Ministry and the Board of Environmental Protection and Improvement with regard to this issue,” highlighted Dr. Sarkar Surchi.

For his part, The Director of Erbil's Environmental Office, Dilshad Mohammed, said: "We used to punish vehicles that emit harmful smoke, but from 2022, the Erbil Traffic Directorate was charged with the task of the punishment of these vehicles.”

These vehicles must be confiscated and the owners should receive fines because they cause pollution to the environment and spread of disease," he remarked.

The Erbil Traffic Authority has issued a stern warning, stating that vehicles emitting excessive smoke and polluting the environment will face seizure and legal scrutiny.

He affirmed that the warning remains in effect, with Erbil Traffic police actively enforcing penalties against offenders.
