ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Wednesday discussed recent developments in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and Syria with Major General Joel B. Vowell, commander of the Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve, and his accompanying delegation, according to a statement from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

Both sides emphasized their continued support for the reforms of the Ministry of Peshmerga and the unification of Peshmerga forces.

The discussion also touched upon the significance of maintaining security and stability in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. Furthermore, there was an emphasis on the need to enhance coordination and cooperation between the Peshmerga forces, the Iraqi army, and coalition forces to effectively confront the threats posed by ISIS and terrorism in general.

Although ISIS was defeated territorially in 2017 by Kurdish and Iraqi forces with Coalition support, the group still poses a threat to security forces and civilians alike.

The Ministry of Peshmerga continues to receive military aid from the US-led coalition through the US Department of Defense (DoD)-funded Counter-ISIS Train and Equip Fund (CTEF) program.

In 2022 alone, the US provided $351 million in equipment and ammunition to Peshmerga forces from the counter-terrorism equipment fund, according to Major Rachael Jeffcoat, the coalition spokesperson.
