Mass grave uncovered in Tal Afar reveals victims of ISIS atrocities
ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Iraqi Security Media Cell announced the discovery of the remains of 14 individuals, victims of the ISIS terrorists, in the Tal Afar district.
According to an official statement, the discovery was made following a tip-off from local citizens regarding human remains in the al-Saad neighborhood of Tal Afar.
A joint force, comprising the Second Regiment of the 73rd Infantry Brigade, 15th Division, and the Popular Mobilization Forces, commenced a search in the area.
The grim find was made by a citizen while laying the foundation for a new school in the neighborhood.
"Through initial investigation, it was found that these remains belong to 14 victims of the criminal ISIS terrorists who had buried them earlier," the statement revealed. Legal measures were promptly taken, and the remains were secured for identification by competent authorities.
Khalil Mohsen, the district's administrator, confirmed the discovery of the mass grave during the renovation of an abandoned school in the area, unused since 2014. The site, which included skeletons buried haphazardly, was uncovered by an excavator working on the school project.
Mohsen noted that among the victims are children, though their identities remain unknown. "The site has been secured, and a specialized team from the Mass Graves Authority is expected to arrive on Saturday to formally open and investigate the grave," he added.
