WASHINGTON, United States (Kurdistan24) - Aufzien fellow and Director of the Program on Arab Politics at The Washington Institute for Near East Policy, David Schenker told Kurdistan24 on Thursday that the Kurdistan Region is already operating independently in a very moderate way.

Schenker believes that the US' stance on Kurdish independence will be hinged on how North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) countries and Turkey respond.

Additionally, Schenker sees a growing logistics issue between Erbil and Baghdad regarding Peshmerga armament.

Schenker previously served in the Office of the Secretary of Defense as Levant country director, the Pentagon's top policy aide on the Arab nations of the Levant.

In that capacity, he was responsible for advising the secretary and other senior Pentagon leadership on military and political affairs of Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and the Palestinian territories. He was awarded the Office of the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Civilian Service in 2005.
