Two Asayish members killed in Sulaimani's Qaradagh district
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Two Asayish (security) members were killed in a shooting incident in the Qaradagh district of Sulaimani province, according to preliminary reports. The tragic event took place in the Qopi Qaradagh Valley, a region known for its archaeological significance.
Rauf Kamal, the governor of Qaradagh district, confirmed the incident to Kurdistan24, stating that two Asayish members were shot dead by multiple suspects. The suspects are believed to be involved in smuggling activities, specifically targeting ancient archaeological artifacts.
A Kurdistan24 reporter added that initial information suggests the gunmen were attempting to loot items from a site believed to date back to the era of Naram-Sin, an ancient Mesopotamian king.
In an official statement, Sulaimani security forces disclosed that the confrontation occurred around 5:00 p.m. as a security team was conducting routine surveillance to protect the archaeological site. The attempt to seize these valuable historical pieces escalated into violence, leading to the deaths of two security officers.
The Qopi Qaradagh valley, nestled between Mount Sagrma and Mount Zarde, serves as a natural divide between the Qaradagh and Garmiyan regions.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident and have vowed to bring those responsible to justice. The loss of two security personnel underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in protecting the region's rich cultural heritage.
