American soldier killed near Erbil

On Saturday, an American soldier was killed following an attack by the Islamic State (IS) in Erbil.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) - On Saturday, an American soldier was killed following an attack by the Islamic State (IS) in Erbil.

Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR) confirmed that a Coalition service member in northern Iraq was killed as a result of an "enemy attack." IS insurgents are believed to be responsible.

The coalition base is located in Makhmour town in southwestern Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region. The base conducts advise-and-assist activities for the Kurdish Peshmerga forces who have been one of the most effective ground forces in defeating IS extremists.

Kurdistan24 learned that a few American soldiers were wounded in the IS rocket attack, but officials declined to reveal the number and how seriously the injuries are.

The American that was killed was on security duty when the IS-rocket attack occured.

Moreover, the identity of the member has not been revealed, and the family has not been notified yet.

The last US service member that was killed in Iraq was Master Sgt. Joshua L. Wheeler of Roland, Oklahoma, who died in October 2015 during a rescue mission in northern Iraq. Master Sgt. Wheeler was the first American to die in combat in Iraq since 2011.
