Peshmerga delegation will visit US

“The discussions will be about the project previously given to the US government."

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – A Kurdistan Region delegation from the Ministry of Peshmerga will visit the US in April, asking for more support to the Peshmerga forces among other discussions.

Jabar Yawar, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Peshmerga, announced on Tuesday that the delegation is waiting for a suitable time to make the visit, which is going to be within this month [April]. “The agenda of the visit is to discuss the war against Islamic State (IS), especially the fight against IS on the borders of the Kurdistan Region,” he added.

Speaking to Kurdistan24, Yawar revealed that “the discussions will be about the project previously given to the US government to provide assistance to the Peshmerga forces, including financial support.”

“The members of the delegation have been chosen and endorsed by the Council of Ministers and Kurdistan Presidency, and the delegation’s agenda has been decided but the time of the visit is not yet identified,” Yawar said.

According to Yawar, the delegation is headed by the Acting Minister of Peshmerga Kareem Sinjari and will include senior officials from the Ministry of Peshmerga.

Elsewhere, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani welcomed a US congressional delegation headed by Edward Royce, the chairman of House Committee on Foreign Affairs.

According to a statement released on the KRG website, Barzani stressed that the Peshmerga forces need continuous support from the US and the coalition. “Peshmerga forces need more modern weapons to be able to continue their victory against IS,” Barzani said.

The US delegation voiced their “commitment to support the Kurdistan Region and its military, the Peshmerga forces, in the war against terrorism,” the statement added.

In January 2016, a senior KRG delegation led by Fuad Hussein, Chief of Staff to the Kurdistan Region President, and Falah Mustafa Bakir, Head of the KRG Department of Foreign Relations (DFR), visited Washington DC. The delegation updated the US presidential administration, senators, congressmen, and media on the multiple crises currently engulfing the Kurdistan Region.

Previously, Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman, KRG Representative to the United States, announced that the US officials are partners with the Region at a time of economic and security crises.
