KRG discusses financial crisis with US officials

The KRG delegation will discuss financial crisis facing the KRG with the US officials.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – A delegation headed by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Deputy Prime Minister traveled to Washington DC to discuss the Peshmerga forces' achievements and ways to support them in their vital fight against the Islamic State (IS).

Kurdish fighters have been one of the most effective forces against the international terrorists of IS who recently bombed Brussels and have so far killed and displaced countless millions.

But the current financial crisis has currently limited the KRG in supporting these essential forces.

The KRG delegation headed by Qubad Talabani, DPM, accompanied by Karim Sinjari, Acting Minister of Peshmerga, and Falah Mustafa, head of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFR), arrived in Washington DC on Sunday.

According to the DFR, the weeklong visit will shed light on the financial crisis facing the KRG.

Previously, Jabar Yawar, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Peshmerga, told a Kurdistan24 reporter that a KRG delegation will visit the US to "discuss the war against Islamic State (IS), especially the fight against IS on the borders of the Kurdistan Region,” he added.

“The discussions with the US officials and lawmakers will be about the project previously given to the US government to provide assistance to the Peshmerga forces, including financial support,” Yawar said.

Elsewhere, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani welcomed a US congressional delegation headed by Edward Royce, the chairman of House Committee on Foreign Affairs.

According to a statement released on the KRG website, Barzani stressed that the Peshmerga forces need continuous support from the US and the coalition. “Peshmerga forces need more modern weapons to be able to continue their victory against IS,” Barzani said.

The US delegation voiced their “commitment to support the Kurdistan Region and its military, the Peshmerga forces, in the war against terrorism,” the statement added.

In January 2016, a senior KRG delegation led by Fuad Hussein, Chief of Staff to the Kurdistan Region President, and Falah Mustafa Bakir, Head of the KRG Department of Foreign Relations (DFR), visited Washington DC. The delegation briefed the US presidential administration, senators, congressmen, and media on the multiple crises currently engulfing the Kurdistan Region.
