WASHINGTON, United States (Kurdistan24) – In a recent interview with Kurdistan24, vice president of research at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) Dr. Jonathan Schanzer stated that Iran is manipulating the Kurdish issue to drive its political agenda in the Middle East.

Schanzer claims that Iran plays a "dangerous role" in the region, and it was a mistake for the United States administration to focus only on the nuclear deal while ignoring other aspects of Iran.

Additionally, he believes that Tehran is empowering the Iraqi Shia militia at the expense of Sunni Arabs and Kurds in Iraq. He also highlighted the current situation in Syria and stated that it is too early to decide on federalism for the country.

Schanzer brings substantial scholarship and public policy credentials to his job of overseeing FDD's research.  He worked as a terrorism finance analyst at the US Department of the Treasury, where he played an integral role in the designation of numerous terrorist financiers.

A former research fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, Schanzer has studied Middle East history in four countries. He earned his Ph.D. from King's College London, where he wrote his dissertation on the US Congress and its efforts to combat terrorism in the 20th century.
