India to open Consulate General in Kurdistan Region

The opening of Indian Consulate General in Erbil will improve the bilateral relations in culture, health, and economy, said Kurdish PM on Wednesday.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – The opening of Indian Consulate General in Erbil will improve the bilateral relations in culture, health and economy, said Kurdish PM on Wednesday.

The Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region Nechirvan Barzani met Indian Ambassador to Baghdad George Raju and his accompanied delegates in Erbil.

 

During the meeting, Raju praised the role of the Kurdish Peshmerga forces in the fight against the Islamic State (IS). He mentioned that its government aims to strengthen diplomatic ties with the Kurdistan Region by opening Indian Consulate General in the Region.

Indian Ambassador also mentioned that they will encourage Indian business owners to invest in the Kurdistan Region. He hoped that both governments can cooperate and improve ties in terms of culture and economy.

Raju also noted that India can assist the people of the Kurdistan Region by providing reserved seats to students in the Region who wish to continue their higher education in India.

Barzani welcomed India's decision to open Consulate General in Erbil. He pointed out that although investment has been slow in the Region in the current years due to the financial crisis and IS war, in post-IS there will be better opportunities for investment in the Kurdistan Region.

He also thanked the Indian government for assisting the students of the Kurdistan Region who study in that country. He also showed appreciation for Indians who are training KRG employees to improve their administration skills at the regional government.
