Erbil hosts meeting on Mosul liberation

Kurdistan Region, Iraqi and US officials discussed plans for the liberation of Mosul on Sunday in the city of Erbil.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – Kurdistan Region, Iraqi and US officials discussed plans for the liberation of Mosul on Sunday in the city of Erbil.

According to a statement by the Kurdistan Region Presidency, President Masoud Barzani said that the Region and Peshmerga forces are a real partner with Iraq in the war against the Islamic State (IS).

Barzani revealed that the Iraqi government should be committed to its security and military duties between the Kurdistan Region and participate in the Mosul liberation operation.

Falih al-Fayadh, Iraq’s National Security Adviser, who headed the Iraqi government delegation, expressed his government’s security and military commitment in the next offensive against IS in Mosul.

Fayadh called for strengthening the trust, cooperation, and joint work between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). He also stressed on Peshmerga, Iraqi army and coalition partnership in the war against IS, especially in the Mosul operation.

The US delegation who participated in the meeting included the US Ambassador to Iraq, the Special Presidential Envoy for the war against IS Brett McGurk, and the US Consul in Erbil.

In a tweet before the meeting, McGurk stated that he would attend “important meetings between the KRG and Iraqi government officials to prepare the ground for [the] liberation of Mosul.”

Following Fallujah’s liberation, Iraqi security forces are likely to concentrate on the Mosul offensive in cooperation with Peshmerga forces and the international coalition.
