WASHINGTON, United States (Kurdistan24) – In a recent interview with Kurdistan24, a US politician discussed the future of Iraq and highlighted the importance of Kurds.

US Congressman Steve Knight spoke to Kurdistan24 about the impending situation in Iraq after the Islamic State (IS). Knight pointed to a possible triple division of the country between Kurds, Sunnis, and Shias.

“Well, that’s the problem, isn’t it? Because of the issues that have happened over the last hundreds of years is it going to be three different countries, three different sections?” He questioned.

Peters acknowledged that the future of Iraq would be difficult to settle post-IS, but that the Kurds will play a large role in the “movement forward.”

“Our connections with Kurds and our connection to the Kurds helping us, and the Kurds helping the allied forces and our working with them is a big part of the movement forward,” Knight explained.

“If we can get a Democratic vote [to] move forward with the Kurdish people, I think that’s got to be the way to go,” he added.

The Congressman also mentioned the US’ role with regards to the Sunnis in the country and explained that the United Nations must get involved.

“I can’t specifically say that we will work with the Sunnis to get them their own country or their own section, but I would hope…that the United Nations would have something to do with this too,” he said.

Knight was elected to Congress and currently represents the 25th District of California. He lives in Palmdale, California with his wife, and two sons.
