ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – Kurdish Peshmerga forces and the US-led coalition warplanes on Friday defeated an attack by the Islamic State (IS) in southwestern Kirkuk, according to a Peshmerga Commander.

The insurgent group attacked Peshmerga front lines in southwestern Kirkuk at 6:00 p.m., a Peshmerga Commander told Kurdistan24.

Moreover, the Commander stated the coalition jets and Peshmerga forces killed 22 IS militants.

“Da’esh militants attacked with four military vehicles from different front lines. All the vehicles were destroyed before reaching Peshmerga front lines,” said the Peshmerga Commander, using the Arabic term for IS.

The jihadist attack on southwestern Kirkuk was part of the group’s assault in the province where the militants temporarily took control of several buildings.

The area was later secured by Kirkuk security and Peshmerga forces.
