Italian Defense Minister: Italy continues military support to Peshmerga

The Kurdistan Region President met with the Italian Defense Minister and discussed bilateral relations and the war against Islamic State (IS).

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Region President met with the Italian Defense Minister and discussed bilateral relations and the war against Islamic State (IS).

The meeting between the Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani and an Italian military delegation headed by the Defense Minister, Roberta Pinotti, took place in the town of Pirmam, also known as Salahadin.

The Italian Defense Minister praised the bravery of the Peshmerga forces in the fight against IS extremists, stating that “Italy is proud to support and help the Peshmerga forces," according to a statement by the Kurdistan Region Presidency (KRP),

Pinotti reiterated Italy’s continued support for the Peshmerg forces as part of the global coalition against IS.

President Barzani expressed his gratitude to Italian people, government, and army for supporting the Kurdistan Region Peshmerga who fight IS, the destructive force of our time, on behalf of the world.

“Italian military support for the Peshmerga forces and the training provided for to the forces have been very helpful,” President Barzani acknowledged.

On Wednesday, Italian Defense Minister arrived in Erbil, capital of the Kurdistan Region, and met with Kurdish officials.

The Italian delegation met with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) PM Nechirvan Barzani, Deputy PM Qubad Talabani and other Kurdish officials.

According to a KRG statement, Pinotti praised the bilateral relations between Kurdistan and Italy and reiterated strengthening the relations.

According to Rezan Kader, the KRG representative in Italy, there are more than 800 Italian soldiers and advisers in the Kurdistan Region training the Peshmerga forces and additional 500 troops are deployed in the Mosul dam.
