ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister and Vice President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Masrour Barzani on Sunday released a statement commemorating the Gulan (May) Revolution.

“In honor of the 48th anniversary of the Gulan Revolution, I congratulate President Barzani, the heroic Peshmergas, and all revolution participants,” the statement read.

The statement also added, "The Gulan Revolution, a poignant continuation of the September Revolution spearheaded by the late [Mustafa] Barzani, reignited profound hope within the Kurdish community. It stood as a resolute defiance against the concerted efforts of adversaries seeking to quell the revolution and delegitimize the noble struggle. The unwavering resilience of the Kurdish people, coupled with the unbreakable unity and solidarity among Kurdish factions and parties, ushered in a series of monumental national accomplishments. Foremost among these triumphs were the historic uprising of 1991, the advent of parliamentary elections, and the establishment of the Kurdistan Regional Government.”

“This 48th anniversary of the Gulan Revolution commemorates all the fighters who took part in it, especially Idris Barzani, the revolutionary leader who will always be remembered,” Barzani said.

The Gulan Revolution began a year after the collapse of the well-known September Revolution, spearheaded by the late Mustafa Barzani in 1975 after Iraq’s then-Vice President Saddam Hussein and the Shah of Iran Mohammad Reza Pahlavi signed the Algiers Agreement against the Kurds.
