Iraqi government welcomes the date set for Kurdistan Region parliamentary elections

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Bassem al-Awadi, spokesperson for the Iraqi government, on Wednesday announced that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani warmly welcomed the Kurdistan Region Presidency's decision to hold parliamentary elections on October 20.

Al-Awadi further emphasized that the Iraqi government is fully prepared to support all necessary conditions to ensure the success of this electoral process.

"We will make every effort to increase the participation of our Kurdish citizens and all our brothers in the Kurdistan Region so that the results reflect true democratic principles,” he added.

Earlier on Wednesday, Dilshad Shahab, spokesperson for the Kurdistan Region Presidency, declared that President Nechirvan Barzani has issued Regional Decree No. 222 of 2024. The decree stipulates the following:

1. The general elections for the sixth session of the Kurdistan Region Parliament will be held on October 20, 2024.

2. All relevant parties are required to cooperate and coordinate with the Independent High Electoral Commission of Iraq to implement this decree.

3. This order shall come into effect immediately upon issuance and will be published in the Official Gazette.
