KRG to take part at UN CERD Session in Geneva
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is set to collaborate with Iraq's delegation at the 27th Session of the Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD), taking place on August 14-15, at the United Nations Headquarters in Geneva. This session is part of the broader 113th session of CERD, which runs from August 5 to 23.
Key figures in Iraq's delegation include the Minister of Justice Khalid Shwani and the Chairman of the Committee on Notifications and International Treaties. The KRG will be represented by Dindar Zebari, Coordinator of International Advocacy, who highlighted the importance of the KRG’s involvement in the session.
In a statement, Zebari emphasized that the KRG's participation is crucial for reinforcing the region's commitment to international human rights standards. The KRG delegation plans to showcase its progress in legislative reforms, frameworks, and measures aimed at combating racial discrimination. The delegation will also discuss recent initiatives undertaken between 2021 and 2024 to enhance human rights in the Kurdistan Region.
This session will see Iraq's review under CERD, where the Iraqi government, alongside the KRG, will present its efforts and respond to international scrutiny. The CERD, an independent body of experts, monitors the implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) by its state parties. The session will serve as a platform for the 177 countries that have ratified the Convention to report on their progress.
The KRG’s participation in such international forums underscores its dedication to upholding and advancing human rights in the region.
