Duhok Beekeepers Association reports severe impact of PKK-Turkey conflict on honey production
ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The ongoing conflict between the PKK and Turkey has significantly disrupted honey production in the Amedi region, according to the Duhok Beekeepers Association.
Hoger Ismat, an executive with the association, explained to Kurdistan24 that the war has had a profound impact on the agricultural sector, particularly affecting honey production.
"The conflict has severely disrupted beekeeping activities in Nerva and Rekan areas of Amedi, where beekeepers are unable to access their hives. Some of the traditional honey springs have been destroyed, and large areas of mountainous land have been burned," Ismat said.
Despite the challenges, Ismat highlighted that the region's climate remains highly favorable for honey production, and the honey produced is of exceptional quality, often used for medicinal purposes.
The region previously boasted around 1,600 beekeepers, providing valuable employment opportunities for young people and generating a substantial income.
In peak years, honey production in the region reached 80-90 tons. Notably, in 2010, honey from the region won first place in France, and in 2017, it secured top honors in Egypt and among 34 countries, including Saudi Arabia.
