KRG implements 1,300-meter irrigation project to revive agriculture in Garmian
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is undertaking a significant irrigation project in the Garmian region, aiming to enhance agricultural productivity and support local farmers.
The project, located in the village of Omerble in the northern Kifri district within the Garmian Independent Administration, involves the construction of a 1,300-meter-long irrigation system.
This initiative is set to irrigate 140 dunams (approximately 35 acres) of agricultural land, bringing new life to an area that has long relied on farming.
Siamand Hamajan, a farmer from Omerble with over 30 years of experience, expressed his gratitude for the government's support.
He noted that agriculture in the region has seen a revival due to the KRG's initiatives, leading many farmers to return to the land. "This year, in addition to grains, vegetables, and fruits, we have even planted rice fields," Hamajan said.
Miran Ahmad, the engineer overseeing the project, highlighted its significance in modernizing irrigation practices between the villages of Chwar Shakh and Omerble. He stated that the project is designed to rejuvenate the agricultural sector and make farming more efficient and sustainable for local farmers.
According to Ahmad, representatives from the Council of Ministers will soon visit the site to monitor the project's progress, which is expected to bring substantial benefits to both agriculture and livestock farming in the region.
Another local farmer, Sarwar Akbar, explained the challenges they faced before the implementation of this project. "Before this project, 80% of the water that reached our lands was wasted, leaving us with only a small portion for agricultural use," Akbar said. The new irrigation system is expected to significantly reduce water waste and allow farmers to utilize more of their land for cultivation.
