Former Senator: US-Kurdistan relations "critically important"

WASHINGTON, United States (Kurdistan24) – In an interview with Kurdistan24 on March 11, former US Senator Norm Coleman discussed US-Kurdistan Region relations, the Syrian regime, Iran, Iraq, Islamic State (IS) and Kurdish independence.

Coleman stated that the US' relations with the Kurdistan Region are "critically important." At the same time, he believes that other duties should be considered before Kurdish independence.

Coleman is a Jewish-American politician and lawyer who formerly served in the US Senate. He was a student activist in the 1960s, Minnesota's chief prosecutor and solicitor general in the 1970s and 1980s, and mayor of St. Paul in the 1990s. He represented Minnesota in the US Senate from 2003-09.

The former senator served on the prestigious Foreign Relations Committee. He was chair of the Western Hemisphere subcommittee and ranking member of the Near East subcommittee, working to foster closer ties with the US' hemispheric neighbors and protect America's interests in the crucial Middle East region.
