ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) - Gavriel Mairone, a human rights attorney, working to prosecute companies who sold chemical weapons to the former dictatorship government of Iraq, explains to Kurdistan24 the importance of internationally recognizing Kurdish genocide. Mairone believes that Kurdish independence will have an impact on the genocide case becoming acknowledged globally.

On March 16, 1988, the Iraqi Ba’ath regime indiscriminately targeted the Kurdish population of Iraq with a series of poison gas attacks that killed over 5,000 civilians instantly. A further 7,000 to 10,000 people were injured.
