A high-ranking Peshmerga officer and his bodyguard were killed in a family dispute on Sunday in the Kurdistan Region, Sulaimani Governorate Police Department (SGPD) revealed in a public statement on Monday.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – A high-ranking Peshmerga officer and his bodyguard were killed in a family dispute on Sunday in the Kurdistan Region, Sulaimani Governorate Police Department (SGPD) revealed in a public statement on Monday.

“Last night in the Tasluja district of Sulaimani governorate, due to a family dispute, two persons were killed,” SGPD announced, pointing out that after the arrival of the police forces, they “took the bodies to the Sulaimani Coroner’s Court” for inspection.

According to a statement by the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC), criminal activity has been on the rise recently, with the council claiming they are imposing measures to tackle the challenges.

According to the information SGPD released, the victims were a Peshmerga officer and the other the bodyguard of the Peshmerga, suggesting an officer of high rank in the Kurdistan Region Security Forces.

The police have not apprehended the suspect(s) who killed the two men by gunfire after a quarrel broke out from a family dispute between two parties.

SGPD revealed they had confiscated “three vehicles, three Kalashnikovs, and two handguns” related to the crime, and said a police investigation into the case is ongoing.

The recent cases all seem to have a common characteristic, that of past personal disputes between the involved parties.

In Erbil, meanwhile, another person, who turned himself in to authorities, killed a Peshmerga of the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, who was on his way home after Ramadan prayers with his son.

The son, however, was unharmed.
