EU to Erbil, Baghdad: Dialogue only way to resolve disputes

KRG respects the interpretation of the Federal Supreme Court of the Article 1 of the Iraqi Constitution.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – The European Union in a press release on Wednesday welcomed the statement from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) that accepted the Iraqi Federal Court ruling as a basis for dialogues.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the KRG stated that they respect the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court's recent interpretation of Article 1 of the constitution.

“We respect the interpretation of the Federal Supreme Court of the Article 1 of the Iraqi Constitution,” the KRG statement said.

On Wednesday, the European Union issued a statement, welcoming the KRG’s position, expressing readiness to support dialogue between Erbil and Baghdad.

“The KRG statement… expresses clear commitment to engage in a meaningful dialogue with the Government of Iraq, based on the constitutional framework,” the EU statement added, stating that the move “is a significant step.”

EU hopes that the KRG statement opens the way to a comprehensive dialogue with the Government of Iraq, adding that “This [dialogue] is the only manner to resolve all the pending disputes in the interest of a peaceful and prosperous future for all Iraqi citizens.”

“The EU stands ready to offer its support to such a dialogue if requested by all parties,” the statement concluded.
