Masoud Barzani discusses post-election stage with senior Iraqi leaders

“The Iraqi leaders congratulated President Barzani over the KDP’s victory [in the Iraqi parliamentary elections] in Kurdistan.”

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) has spoken with several senior Iraqi leaders to discuss the Iraqi parliamentary elections results and the post-election stage.

“On Tuesday and Wednesday, former Kurdistan Region President and leader of the KDP Masoud Barzani spoke over the phone with Head of the Sadr Movement Muqtada al-Sadr, Head of al-Hikma Movement Ammar al-Hakim, Head of al-Fatih Coalition Hadi al-Amiri, Iraqi Prime Minister and Head of al-Nasr Coalition Haider al-Abadi, and Iraqi President Fuad Masum to discuss the elections results,” a statement from Barzani’s personal website said.

“The Iraqi leaders congratulated President Barzani over the KDP’s victory [in the Iraqi parliamentary elections] in Kurdistan,” the statement added.

Barzani and Iraqi leaders also “exchanged opinions over the post-election stage.”  

Sadr’s office on Thursday announced that the Shia cleric had received calls that day by top leaders in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq congratulating him on his recent electoral victory.

“Muqtada al-Sadr received a phone call from Mr. Masoud Barzani and Kurdistan Regional Government [Prime Minister] Nechirvan Barzani to congratulate him on his election campaign and the victory,” a statement posted on Sadr’s website read.

A statement released by Hadi al-Amiri’s office, meanwhile, said Barzani and Amiri discussed the success of the elections and the importance of all lists and parties upholding their commitments and fulfilling the people’s demands.

According to preliminary results, Sadr’s Sairoon coalition is leading the Iraqi polls with over 50 seats while the KDP is the leading party in the Kurdistan Region with at least 25 seats.
