Earthquake in southeast Turkey wounds at least 13 people: State-agency

An earthquake hit Adiyaman province in southeastern of Turkey on early Tuesday, wounding at least 13 people and causing damage to buildings.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – An earthquake struck Adiyaman province in southeastern Turkey early on Tuesday, wounding at least 13 people and inflicting damage to buildings, state-run media reported.

The quake struck at 00:34 GMT with a magnitude of 5.2 and occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles), according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Sezdat Sezik, Governor of the majority-Kurdish Samsat District, told the Anadolu Agency that at least 13 people were injured and transferred to hospitals, stating they were not in serious condition.

Sezik added that the earthquake was also felt in nearby cities such as Sanliurfa, Gaziantep, and Diyarbakir.

Speaking to reporters ahead of his visit to Spain on Tuesday, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said no fatalities as a result of the earthquake had been reported in the district.

Photos posted on social media show substantial damage to multiple houses in the area.

Eight small aftershocks followed the earthquake in the area, said Anadolu.

Other local media reported that schools were closed in the area following the quake.
