COVID-19: Kurdistan Region records over 1,000 cases for second consecutive day; PM urges taking precautions

The Kurdistan Region’s Health Ministry on Tuesday announced over 1,000 new cases for the second day in a row along with 24 fatalities as Prime Minister Masrour Barzani urged the public on the same day to take precautions as daily cases are spiking.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Kurdistan Region’s Health Ministry on Tuesday announced over 1,000 new cases for the second day in a row along with 24 fatalities as Prime Minister Masrour Barzani urged the public on the same day to take precautions as daily cases are spiking.

The ministry’s figures come as the Kurdistan Region recorded 1,032 cases in 24 hours for the first time on Monday.

The latest ministry statement said health workers across the region had conducted 5,885 tests during the past 24 hours, raising the total number of such tests to 577,120 since the outbreak began in the Kurdistan Region in early March.

Out of the tests conducted in the past 24 hours, the region recorded 1,010 infections. The total number of infections has reached 63,745.

The ministry also recorded 24 deaths in the past 24 hours, raising the total number of deaths from the virus to 2,211.

Health officials say that over 37,800 people have recovered from the highly contagious disease. However, it is important to note that the classification of “recovery” indicates that a patient is no longer being actively treated by health professionals, not that they have fully recovered.

Increasingly, medical experts recognize that COVID-19 symptoms, some of which are quite serious, often continue long after an individual’s formal recovery and that various other symptoms, such as significant lung damage, could be permanent.

PM Barzani urges public

Prime Minister Barzani on Tuesday urged the public to take precautionary measures seriously as the number of daily cases is spiking.

The PM’s request to the public came during a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Duhok province, in which a new strategic highway was inaugurated, connecting Erbil and Duhok provinces.

On multiple occasions, the Kurdistan Region’s health officials have warned that infections are rising as the Fall and Winter seasons approach.
