Germany builds medicine storage for Peshmerga

Germany on Tuesday completed the construction of a high-standard medicine store for the Kurdistan Region’s Peshmerga forces in Erbil.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – Germany on Tuesday completed the construction of a high-standard medicine store for the Kurdistan Region’s Peshmerga forces in Erbil.

As part of the German assistance to Kurdistan and Peshmerga, a medical storage was built by Germany and handed over to the Ministry of Peshmerga.

Brigadier Salar Jabbar, the deputy chief of staff of the Peshmerga forces, spoke to Kurdistan24 about the significance of the medical facility.

“This is the first high-standard storage to be used by the Peshmerga forces in coordination with the Ministry of Health to store medicine and other medical related items,” Jabbar said.

The Brigadier added the storage was one of many important projects implemented by Germany as part of the country’s assistance to the Kurdish forces.

Muhsin Mohammed, a director of the Medical Affairs Directorate of the Ministry of Peshmerga, spoke during a press conference thanking the German government for the valuable contribution to aid the Peshmerga forces.

Moreover, Mohammed stressed the need of having a military hospital for the Peshmerga forces.

“We have many wounded Peshmerga, and without a special hospital for them, our work will be very difficult,” he explained.

The Kurdistan Region currently has one military hospital located in Sulaimani Province. However, there is no military hospital available for the Kurdish forces to get treatment in Erbil or Duhok Provinces.

The Directorate of Health in Erbil previously announced the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) had plans to build a military hospital in Erbil for treating Peshmerga fighters wounded in the battle against the Islamic State (IS).

Due to lack of budget, the project has not yet started.

Germany is one of the countries involved in the US-led anti-IS coalition that has provided military support to the Kurdish forces in their battle to defeat IS extremists.
