Syrian Kurds support protests against ‘anti-Kurdish’ Iranian regime: ENKS

The Syrian Kurdish National Council (ENKS) on Wednesday expressed its support for the recent country-wide anti-government protests in Iran.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – The Syrian Kurdish National Council (ENKS) on Wednesday expressed its support for the recent country-wide anti-government protests in Iran.

In an official statement, the ENKS said the Iranian regime had “strongly supported” Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the suppression of opposition groups, including the Kurds.

The statement also said the current Iranian government has “reverted the goals of the Iranian people’s revolution of freedom, justice, and equality that overthrew the previous regime in 1979.”

“The new Iranian regime has since adopted the policy of exporting the revolution and creating unrest among the peoples of the region,” the ENKS statement continued, adding that the Kurds in Iran were one of the most tortured minority groups.

On Wednesday, Iran deployed their Revolutionary Guards forces to three provinces to crackdown on anti-government protests following six days of country-wide demonstrations which left 22 people dead and hundreds more arrested.

The protests, which started last week, quickly spread to cities across the country as demonstrators protested high unemployment, income inequality, and corruption within the Iranian government.

In response to the unrest, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), an elite force of the Shia-dominated theocracy, were dispatched to the provinces of Hamadan, Isfahan, and Lorestan to address “the new sedition,” IRGC commander Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari said.

“No matter how oppressive the tyrants are, they will not be able to break the will of the people in their demands for freedom, democracy, and justice,” the ENKS statement read, asserting its solidarity with “millions who have rebelled against oppression.”

“We stand with the freedom of Iranian people and their aspirations for the establishment of a democratic system that meets their demands and upholds national rights and democracy for all its people,” the statement concluded.
